WE ARE BACK!!

Welcome back to our blog! We are so excited to share some of our learning and explorations with you.  Let's catch you up a bit, and show you a few of the discoveries and adventures we have had so far...

Our Milk Experiment

This is how you can do the milk experiment at home...
Put some milk in the bottom of a shallow pan.
Add a few drops of food colouring.
Drizzle in some dish detergent, or put it on a Q-tip and touch the spots of food colouring.
Watch what happens!

Nature Exploration

We love to explore nature!

The Great Toothpaste Challenge!

We love to start the year by teaching our new team to work together! In this toothpaste challenge, teams had to work together to squeeze all of the toothpaste out of the tube, and onto a plate. The tricky part came when I asked them to try putting all of the toothpaste back into the tube!! It was a lesson to remind us to choose our words wisely, because sometimes once the words come out...they can be hard to put back.

Our visit with Bearded Lizards!

We were very luckily to have TWO Bearded Dragons come to visit our classroom. The students asked so many wonderful questions! We got to to touch them, watch them eat crickets, and observe them in our classroom for the day!

Seashell Exploration

Thanksgiving Fun with Apple Turkeys

Magic Mud!

Who knew that a mixture of cornstarch and water could be so much fun!

Halloween Learning Stations with Room 23

Drama with Daina

We were very lucky to Daina come in and teach us some drama and mime.

Earth Day Dioramas with Lynne Mulvihill

We always love getting the chance to collaborate with local artists. Lynne Mulvihill is a wonderful environmental design artist and architect here in Winnipeg. She came to our class to help us build dioramas of healthy and unhealthy environments in nature. We had wonderful discussions about ways we can help the planet, and had a great time creating our pieces. We hope that Lynne will come back to visit us again soon!

MATH STATIONS

Walking Words Parade

Today the students wrote out words that they knew how to spell on coloured pieces of paper. They stuck the words to themselves, then we took our "Walking Words Parade" to the kindergarten rooms. They were excited to show them how much we have been learning in grade one! Just another sneaky way to get them practicing those high frequency words! 😉

How many can we fit in our mitt?

After reading the story "The Mitten" by Jan Brett, we decided to do a math extension. The students filled one of their mittens with as many unifix cubes as they could. Once it was filled, the students dumped out the cubes and displayed how many they had by making groups of tens and ones.

Making Ice Cream!

One day I decided that it would be fun to give homemade ice cream a try. I had never made ice cream, so as a class we researched how it was done. We gathered our supplies, and when "Ice Cream Day" came, everyone was very excited! I crossed my fingers and secretly purchased a back-up container of store bought ice cream... just in case our ice cream adventure was a flop. We put our ice and ingredients in ziplock bags, put on our mitts, turned on some music, and danced around shaking the bags for 10 mins. It worked!! We had made our own delicious, frosty vanilla ice cream. :)

MEALWORMS!!

For Science Fair, our class decided to observe the metamorphosis of mealworms. Mealworms go through 4 life stages just like butterflies! The students recorded their findings in their very own lab books, and presented their results to the judges.

Candy Cottage Fun!

Sunday 6 April 2014

Welcome to our blog!

We want to begin by catching you up on some of the adventures that we have already had this year...

Early in the year we were gifted with the most amazing wasp nest! We had fun carefully dissecting the nest, and then researching new facts about wasps.

Pumpkin Day!

We met with Miss Cory's class, and participated in 10 exciting Pumpkin Day stations!

Making Bird Feeders!

We have the most beautiful trees right outside our classroom window. One day we saw some amazing Blue Jays flying from tree to tree. The students decided they would like to try making a few different homemade feeders. They were excited to see what kinds of birds might come to the feeders in the winter. We made 4 different types of feeders, hung them in the trees, then put out a binocular observation station by the window. They had a great time observing and recording the birds that they saw.
